Earl underwent elective mitral valve replacement surgery, but the surgery was complicated by a stroke, respiratory failure requiring intubation for supported breathing, and kidney failure, requiring dialysis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following surgery, Earl\u2019s physicians recommended intensive rehabilitation to help him recover. Earl came to ClearSky Rehabilitation Hospital of Avondale where the hospital\u2019s interdisciplinary healthcare team worked with him and his family to develop a personalized treatment plan that included specialized physical, speech, and occupational therapies. He benefited from the respiratory therapy as well, allowing him to have the breathing tube removed. \u201cIt was so liberating to have the tube removed from my throat and breath on my own again,\u201d Earl says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u201cMy speech therapist, Mandy, has had the biggest impact,\u201d<\/em> Earl continues. <em>\u201cShe got me out of bed to work on getting better.\u201d<\/em> This was in line with ClearSky Avondale\u2019s program for attending all meals in the Butterfly Bistro. He also commended occupational therapist, Aya; Louis, the respiratory therapist; the physical therapists; nursing staff; and Marcy, his case manager, for being motivating and helpful. <em>\u201cEven Chef Ray personally stopped by and asked me if there was anything he could do to help me enjoy eating more,\u201d<\/em> he says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After three and one-half weeks at ClearSky Avondale, Earl was discharged without any supplemental oxygen needs, and now can speak clearly, feed himself, shower with some assistance, and walk more than 100 feet using a walker.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earl calls his experience a challenge, but he\u2019s now looking forward to returning home and enjoying his family, the weather, outdoor activities, and his cappuccino and coffee maker.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/p><\/div><div class=\"flex_column av_one_third  flex_column_div   avia-builder-el-5  el_after_av_two_third  avia-builder-el-last  \" style='background: #f9f9f9; border-width:5px; border-color:#ffffff; border-style:solid; box-shadow: 0 0 10px 0 #dddddd; padding:20px 15px 0px 20px ; background-color:#f9f9f9; border-radius:0px; '><p><div  style='padding-bottom:0px; color:#666666;font-size:22px;' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h2 custom-color-heading blockquote modern-quote  avia-builder-el-6  el_before_av_postslider  avia-builder-el-first  av-inherit-size '><h2 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >Recent Blogs\/News<\/h2><div class ='av-subheading av-subheading_below av_custom_color ' style='font-size:15px;'><p>We invite you to view our recent blogs and news.
