When many nerves are affected, it\u2019s called polyneuropathy. <strong>Neuropathies can be caused by numerous underlying conditions, including:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Autoimmune diseases<\/li>\n<li>Diabetes<\/li>\n<li>Infections<\/li>\n<li>Inherited disorders<\/li>\n<li>Medications, especially chemotherapy<\/li>\n<li>Metabolic problems<\/li>\n<li>Toxin exposure<\/li>\n<li>Trauma<\/li>\n<li>Vitamin deficiency<\/li>\n<li>Alcoholism<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Symptoms of neuropathy vary depending upon the nerves affected, but typically include numbness, weakness, and pain. In many cases, symptoms can improve with rehabilitation. <strong>Symptoms may include:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Motor nerve damage \u2013 muscle weakness or pain, lack of coordination, falling, uncontrollable muscle twitching, decreased reflexes<\/li>\n<li>Sensory nerve damage \u2013 tingling or numbness in hands and feet, pain that\u2019s sharp, throbbing or burning, extreme sensitivity to touch<\/li>\n<li>Autonomic nerve damage \u2013 heat intolerance, inability to sweat normally, bowel or bladder problems, changes in heart rate or blood pressure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Treatments for neuropathy can include medications, topical treatments, and therapies. In particular, physical and occupational therapy can help reduce symptoms.
