Remain A Safe Driver Even As You Age

According to the AARP, by 2030, there will be more than 70 million people that are 65 years of age or older, and 85-90% will be licensed to drive. As you age, your driving ability may be affected by changes in vision, physical functioning, memory abilities, as well as some diseases or medications. But you can remain a safe driver as you age. Below are some tips:

  • Set up your navigation app or GPS before you begin driving
  • Drive when conditions are safest
  • Always wear a seat belt as a driver or passenger
  • Don’t drink and drive
  • Don’t eat while driving
  • Don’t talk on the phone or text while driving
  • Listen to music at a low volume
  • Leave multitasking for life outside the car
  • When fatigue hits, pull over
  • Follow a regular activity program to increase strength and flexibility
  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review medicines
  • Have your eyes checked by an eye doctor at least once a year
  • Consider potential alternatives to driving, such as riding with a friend, using rideshare services, or taking public transit
