Preventing a Second Stroke

If you or a family member has suffered a stroke, you can take steps to help prevent another. Up to 80% of strokes can be prevented with a combination of medicine and healthy habits. To begin, learn the type of stroke you had and the cause of it so you can work with your physician to create a plan to avoid another.

The American Stroke Association recommends talking to your physician about:

  • Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) – a quivering or irregular heartbeat that can lead to blood clots. Individuals with AFib are more likely to have a stroke. Sometimes stroke can be the first sign of AFib.
  • Sleep Apnea – when a person’s breathing pauses 5-30 times or more per hour while sleeping. It can be a risk factor for recurrent stroke.
  • Aspirin – Depending on the type of stroke you had, your physician may recommend it as part of your care plan to prevent another stroke.

Talking to your physician about how to control other risk factors also may help prevent a second stroke. Risk factors include blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, alcohol consumption, smoking, and physical activity.
