Cognitive Problems Following a Surgery

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is when cognitive problems associated with surgery continue after the effects of anesthesia have worn off.  POCD can affect memory, attention, judgment, and perception.

Adults aged 65 years and older are more at risk for POCD. Studies have shown it may affect 50-80% of this population at discharge from an acute care setting. Those with pre-existing conditions are especially vulnerable.

At ClearSky Leesville, we help treat POCD by offering: 

• 24-hour rehabilitative nursing care
• Physical, occupational, and speech therapy a minimum of 15 hours a week to improve cognitive and functional abilities, as needed
• Pharmacy consults to manage medications
• Case management to coordinate care during and after hospital stays, including arrangement of further resources and equipment, if necessary
• Family education and caregiver training
• Home evaluations and community outings to prepare patients for a safe return from the hospital
