Sleep and Heart Health

Better sleep means a healthier heart.

According to the American Heart Association, poor quality sleep puts individuals at risk for developing high blood pressure, which is a risk factor of heart disease and stroke. Normally, your blood pressure goes down as you sleep. But, if you have sleep problems, your blood pressure can stay higher for longer periods of time.

Sleep requirements vary by person, but most individuals need 7-9 hours a night. So what can you do to get better sleep? Some tips include:

  • Exercise regularly throughout the day
  • Avoid caffeine before bedtime
  • Establish a nighttime routine
  • Keep your bedroom dark
  • Maintain a cool, comfortable room temperature
  • Eliminate unnecessary noise
  • Turn off your electronic device

If you feel that a health condition is affecting your sleep – like apnea or insomnia – be sure to see your healthcare provider.
