Mindful Holiday Eating

‘Tis the season for extra tasty treats, specialty drinks, and holiday parties. If you want to celebrate the season but keep off the extra pounds, here are a few tips to help you during your celebrations:

Daily

  • Stick to a routine.
  • Always eat a healthy breakfast that includes protein.
  • Aim to get 7-8 hours of quality sleep a night.
  • Keep moving. Even if your exercise routine is disrupted, move as much as possible during the day. Park further from your office building, get up from your desk regularly, go for a quick walk on your lunch break.

Before a party

  • Be prepared. Eat a light, healthy snack before you go out so you don’t arrive hungry.
  • Keep healthy snacks on hand.

At a party

  • Stay busy talking to your friends.
  • Limit alcohol. Alcoholic drinks and cocktails contain hidden calories.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Eat strategically. Try not to pick at food, and eat mindfully. Choose more vegetables and fruits at a buffet.
  • Stand a distance away from the food or buffet to limit temptation.
  • Take one trip to the food table, placing food on a plate before you eat.

Overall, don’t deprive yourself. You want to enjoy the holiday celebrations and the special food and beverages that come along with them, but try to do so in moderation. Have a cookie or a piece of pie, but stay mindful of how many treats you’re eating and drinks you’re consuming.
