Limiting Screen Time After a Concussion
Research conducted at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School shows that limiting screen time for the first 48 hours after a concussion can help shorten symptoms in 12 to 25-year-olds.
The study looked at 125 concussion patients who were put in two groups. Participants in one group avoided screen time (phones, computers, television) and schoolwork for 48 hours immediately following the concussion. Participants in the second group could use screens as long as new symptoms didn’t arise.
The patients completed a post-concussion symptom scale (PCSS) upon initial diagnosis and then every day after for 10 days. The PCSS is a self-reported measure of the severity of symptoms.
At the end of the study, data showed that it took a significantly longer time for participants in the screen-watching group to recover. Those using screens required a median of 8 days to recover, compared to 3.5 days for those who didn’t use screens.
