Prosthetic Care
Taking care of your prosthetic device is crucial for comfort, functionality, and overall health. Since your prosthesis and residual limb work together as a system, neglecting either can lead to discomfort or potential health issues. Below are tips on prosthetic care to ensure long-term performance:
Prosthetic Care Dos:
• Inspect your skin and prosthesis for redness, irritation, or damage daily.
• Wash your device, liner, and socket regularly with mild soap or rubbing alcohol. Dry thoroughly before wearing.
• Use antiperspirants or moisture-wicking solutions to reduce sweat.
• Keep skin hydrated, but ensure it’s dry before using your prosthesis.
• Regularly assess the fit and alignment of your prosthesis.
• Avoid heat, cold, or direct sunlight. Store in a cool, dry place.
• Inspect and replace socks, liners, and components as needed.
Prosthetic Care Don’ts:
• Avoid strong soaps or chemicals on your device and skin.
• Ensure your prosthesis and liner are dry before wearing.
• Regularly follow your prosthetist or therapist’s care recommendations.
• Avoid rough materials that can damage your device.
