Winter Activities – Snow Much Fun!
With the Winter Olympics around the corner, fans may be encouraged to travel and participate in cold-weather sports. Skiing, snowboarding, tubing, snowmobiling, or ice skating can be fun, but winter activities come with some cautionary advice – especially for those who don’t have access to cold weather on a regular basis.
Ice and snow can create hazardous conditions that can lead to falls, which can lead to injuries including sprains, fractures, concussions, and other head injuries. But with a little precaution and planning, you can minimize your risks and keep yourself injury-free.
Some tips include:
- Acknowledge and respect your limitations. If you’re new to an activity, or don’t participate in it often, take a lesson from a trained professional.
- When skiing or snowboarding, go on slopes that are appropriate to your skill level. Stay within marked paths and areas.
- Follow all rules and regulations.
- Wear a helmet and appropriate warm gear that fits properly.
- Pay attention to the ground conditions. Look for icy patches, melted areas, uneven terrain, trees, and turns.
- Don’t go out alone.
- Stay alert and don’t wear headphones.
- Maintain a safe distance and be respectful of others participating in the sport.
- If you fall, try to get up quickly to get out of the way of others.
