Handwashing to Prepare Safe Holiday Meals

If you’re responsible for preparing a holiday meal this month, be sure to properly wash your hands to help prevent the spread of germs.

In a recent study by the USDA, participants who were cooking in a test kitchen failed to wash their hands properly 97% of the time. In addition, 48% of participants cross-contaminated spice containers, and 5% of participants transferred bacteria to the salads they were preparing because of improper handwashing.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, washing your hands with soap and water frequently before, during, and after preparing food is an easy way to prevent germs from spreading around your kitchen.

Handwashing is especially important at these times:

  • After handling uncooked meat, chicken or other poultry, seafood, flour, or eggs.
  • Before and after using gloves to prevent germs from spreading to your food and your hands.
  • Before eating.
  • After touching garbage.
  • After wiping counters or cleaning other surfaces with chemicals.
  • After touching pets, pet food, or pet treats.
  • After coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose.
