Honoring Family Caregivers

The primary objective of a medical rehabilitation hospital is to restore or maintain the ability of patients to function independently. However, in cases where complete independence can’t be achieved, a caregiver may be required for the patient to return home. Inevitably, many of us will find ourselves in a caregiver role at some point in our lives. Over 20 percent of Americans are already caregivers in their own homes. Due to the growing elderly population, there is an increased demand for caregiving, and emphasis should be placed on educating and supporting this population.

Older adults are more susceptible to higher rates of physical and cognitive conditions, as well as multiple chronic conditions that require complex support, management, and care. Additionally, as people age, the likelihood of requiring assistance with instrumental (such as cooking, banking, shopping) and basic (like bathing, dressing, toileting) activities of daily living (ADLs) increases.

Giving caregivers the appropriate training, knowledge, and support significantly impacts patient outcomes. It’s crucial for caregivers to feel confident, informed, supported, and equipped in their roles. Offering opportunities for knowledge-sharing enhances understanding and empathy, reduces stress, and strengthens the caregiving process. Furthermore, it fosters better relationships between the caregiver and the person receiving care.

A medical rehabilitation hospital like ours provides caregivers with:

  • Educational information on continued exercises
  • Behavior modifications
  • Home modifications
  • Assistive devices if necessary

If you are a caregiver, follow these tips for your health:

  • Ask for and accept help
  • Make a list of ways in which others can help you
  • Take the time to eat right
  • Get adequate rest
  • Join a support group
  • Seek social support
  • Keep your own health as a priority
