Comfort Foods

Colder weather brings a lot of things along with it, one of them being the abundance of comfort foods. You know the types– the food that’s higher in calories, fat, or added sugar. To maintain a healthier lifestyle, should you abandon these foods for good?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), healthy eating is all about balance. You can enjoy your favorite comfort foods; the key is to eat them sparingly and balance them with healthier foods and more physical activity.

Following are 3 tips from the CDC:

  • Eat comfort foods less often. If you normally eat these types of food daily, cut back to once a week or once a month.
  • Eat smaller amounts. If you favorite higher-calorie food is a chocolate bar, eat a smaller bar or half of a bar.
  • Substitute a healthier version. Prepare the dish differently using ingredients lower in fat or calories. For example, if your macaroni and cheese recipe calls for whole milk, butter, and full-fat cheese, try making it with skim milk, less butter, and low-fat cheese. Just remember not to increase your portion size.
