Age-Related Falls And What To do

As you age, falls can become more common for a myriad of reasons. Your eyesight, hearing, and reflexes may not be as sharp as they once were when you were younger. Certain conditions like diabetes or heart disease also may affect balance. Other causes of falls may include:

  • Conditions like incontinence, which may cause rushed movements beyond your comfort level
  • Mild cognitive impairments
  • Loss of muscle mass, which may cause problems with balance and walking
  • Blood pressure drops that can cause dizziness
  • Foot pain or problems
  • Medications that may cause confusion or dizziness

Taking precautions like staying physically active, learning about medication side effects, getting plenty of rest, and choosing the right footwear may help prevent a fall. But what should you do if you experience one?

First, take a deep breath and try to relax. Decide if you’re hurt. Getting up too quickly or the wrong way may make an injury worse. If you’re able, crawl to a sturdy chair and slowly sit down. However, if you’re hurt or can’t get up on your own, ask someone for help or call 911.
