Stay Hydrated While Swimming

It’s easy to assume that swimming keeps you hydrated, but that’s a common misconception. Your body still sweats while swimming, especially during high-intensity laps, in heated pools, or on hot, humid days. Because you’re surrounded by water, the sweat goes unnoticed, which makes dehydration a hidden but real risk.

Even mild dehydration can affect energy levels, mental focus, muscle performance, and recovery. You’re not just losing water; your body also loses vital electrolytes like sodium and potassium through sweat. These nutrients are essential for preventing cramps, dizziness, and fatigue, which can impact your safety and performance in the water.

To stay properly hydrated while swimming:

  • Drink regularly before, during, and after your swim, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Keep water poolside to make it easy to take quick sips.
  • Try drinking coconut water as natural source of electrolytes to support post-swim recovery.
  • Consider a sports drink to replace lost electrolytes and carbohydrates after intense or long swim sessions.
  • Drink diluted fruit juice to gain vitamins and hydration with less sugar and faster absorption.
