Prevent triggers that can worsen COPD
If you’re a caregiver for an individual living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), managing the individual’s home to reduce indoor irritants can help prevent flare ups. COPD is a progressive lung disease that makes it difficult for an individual to breathe.
Some ways to prevent common triggers that can worsen COPD symptoms include:
- Maintain a smoke-free environment.
- Make sure doors and windows are sealed properly to keep out any allergens.
- Avoid using items that create smoke or strong odors in the home. This can include fire places, candles, air fresheners, or cleaning supplies like bleach.
- Ask guests to avoid wearing perfume or cologne.
- Dust and vacuum rooms regularly.
- Keep pets out of sleeping areas.
- Replace carpets with hard wood floors.
- Fix any water leaks immediately to prevent mold.
- Keep the house well ventilated. Have air vents inspected and cleaned regularly.
