Patient Overcomes Difficult Health Journey

Before her health took a turn for the worse, 87-year-old Shirley Swenson was enjoying life, which included reading and watching baseball — especially her favorite team, the Arizona Diamondbacks. Shirley worked as a secretary for General Motors for 32 years and has lived in Albuquerque for 20 years.

Shirley began a difficult health journey when she suffered a stroke that created weakness on the right side of her body. She was referred to ClearSky Rehabilitation Hospital of Rio Rancho by the therapy department at the short-term acute care hospital where she received her initial care.

When Shirley arrived at ClearSky Rio Rancho, she had difficulty with her strength, transfers, and walking. She says she felt depressed, but became very motivated and determined during her therapy sessions, which included intensive physical, occupational, and speech therapies. Her goal was to make a safe transition home as she recovered from her stroke.

After two weeks of treatments at ClearSky Rio Rancho, Shirley was able to return home independently with increased strength, mobility, and confidence in her activities of daily living skills.

“I’m so pleased with the help from everyone,” Shirley says. “The staff has been exceptional!”

Shirley says she looks forward to going home and returning to her everyday routine. With the support from her family and friends, Shirley is well-equipped for a successful recovery journey!
