ClearSky Rehabilitation Hospital of Avondale has named Dr. Bruno Subbarao as its new Medical Director. The medical rehabilitation hospital provides specialized rehabilitation to patients recovering from disabling injuries or illnesses such as strokes, brain injuries, hip fractures, spinal injuries, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, or other medically-complex conditions.
In this role, Subbarao will lead the hospital’s interdisciplinary healthcare team, overseeing services such as physical, occupational, and speech therapy; rehabilitative nursing; case management; respiratory therapy; dietary services; and other specialized care.
Subbarao is a board-certified physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation, with a subspecialty in polytrauma and traumatic brain injury. He has 11 years of experience in rehabilitative care and recently served as medical director of a polytrauma program at a veteran’s hospital in Phoenix, Ariz., where he provided care to veterans with orthopedic, neurological, and general rehabilitative needs. He also has served as a preceptor and faculty advisor for future physiatrists, delivered lectures on rehabilitation, and published book chapters and articles on the complications, management, and treatment of brain injuries. In 2019, he contributed to the update of the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Stroke Rehabilitation for the Veterans Health Administration and the Department of Defense.
“I’m excited to work with the outstanding team at ClearSky Avondale,” Subbarao says. “We work with patients and their families at every stage of their rehabilitation journey to maximize their recoveries so they can regain independence and return to their daily activities and lives.”
A Pittsburgh native, Subbarao earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from New York University in New York City, and a medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton, Fla.
